What isn’t being said?

Cross-border teams tend to misread one another. This is not because people lack clarity, but
because the same behaviour can carry different meanings.


A pause may look like hesitation, when someone is actually checking whether it is appropriate to
speak. Or a nod may look like agreement, when it may simply signal respect or attention. Silence
may look like alignment, when it may be protecting hierarchy, harmony, or someoneʼs “faceˮ.
In some work cultures, initiative is shown through speed, directness, and visible challenge. In
others, good judgement is shown through restraint, timing, and sensitivity to authority. When we
only recognise one version of participation, we may miss the other forms of intelligence that are
operating in the same room.
