The Cost of invisible labour

Invisible labour in teams is rarely just about “helping outˮ. It becomes the infrastructure that holds a
team together, and allows it to keep functioning despite unclear roles, weak systems, unresolved
tension, or uneven leadership.

The difficulty is that this work usually looks like maturity, kindness, or professionalism. The person
who checks in on others, softens difficult messages, remembers what was forgotten, or prevents
small issues from becoming visible may be seen as simply “good with peopleˮ. Psychologically,
this invisible labour involves constant regulation work: monitoring the emotional climate,
anticipating reactions, and adjusting themselves.

In many workplaces, especially where harmony, respect, and relational sensitivity matter, people
may hesitate to name this burden directly. They may not want to appear difficult, or overly
demanding. So, this labour stays hidden, and the system continues to rely on the very people it is
draining. What invisible labour have you been carrying?
