AMATA – Towards Smart Sustainable Cities of the Future
AMATA VN Group (AMATA) can be said to be one of the leading industrial park developers in Vietnam. We have set our footprints in Vietnam with a total of six projects (developed and under development) covering an area of 2,500 hectares with total investment capital of about USD840 million. We successfully called in over 4 billion USD of FDI capital from more than 170 tenants and have created jobs for more than 60 thousand local citizens. With a proven record of over 25 years of establishment in Vietnam, sustainability has always been placed a crucial part of our business operation. Through many challenges in the past few years, Amata is proud to be among the drivers of economic growth in the communities it called home.
Climate change is an emerging global challenge that the United Nations has been calling for urgent action and the Vietnamese government has shown strong commitment to be Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2050 in COP26 held in Glasgow late October 2021. Rising global temperature, extreme weather, and increase in natural disasters are consequences of climate change. Without suitable measures, global temperature will continue to rise rapidly above 1.5 degree and will substantially threaten human health and the environment. AMATA wants to play a part in contributing to the global effort in tackling climate change. We have voluntarily taken action in 2020 where we set target to reduce our direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2) greenhouse gas emissions by a total of 5% in year 2022 and 7% in 2025. We have been putting effort to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions through the implementation of many initiatives over the years. We have replaced high energy consumption equipment with lower energy consumption ones, replaced traditional chillers with ozone systems, and utilized green technology – solar cells as source of electricity supply for our office building. Our employees also participated in the action to tackle climate change by voluntarily switching off lights during lunch breaks, taking the stairways, and adjusting the thermostat to 25 degrees Celsius. Through these actions, we have achieved a reduction in electricity consumption from fossil fuels of 19% in 2021 (based year 2017).
Moving forward, AMATA has set an ambitious goal of becoming a Low Carbon City by 2040 under the “Smart City” concept. Becoming a Low Carbon City means that we are reducing our carbon footprint by cutting fossil fuels from our operations and uplifting to be a Smart industrial park. It also involves balancing the emissions with natural carbon sinks such as forestry. With the “Smart City” concept we will explore, with the collaboration of our valuable global partners, on utilization of innovation, technology, and clean alternative energy to achieve a more efficient, more resilient and greener organization and balancing the social and environmental sustainability.
Amata will contribute our best towards a better future for our business and our customers, bring about better-quality life for our community, while living in harmony with nature as we strive to reach our ultimate goal of becoming a Low Carbon City.
